When I was 7 I had to take my hamster to the vet because he had lost a foot on that plastic wheel in the cage. Turns out he had a broken leg as well. Vet couln't do anything for him because the animal would only chew off it's own leg if a splint was applied. So I had to take the thing home, broken leg floping around each time he took a step. Really gross.
Turns out I've out done myself.
Upon asking the Vet today about my male cat Brownie, and if fleas were the reason he was cleaning himself so much, I learned that what he was doing was actually a form of self-mutilation!
My cat has mental problems and now I have to find out what's wrong with him!
WT...........how am I suppose to do that?! It's not like we can sit down and talk about what's been bothering him over a nice hot cup of tea or anything! I'm lucky if he even acknowleges me during the day.
Good Grief Charlie Brown.

Hahahaha my dad took my cat to the vet, and the veteranarian practicaly yelled at him about fleas. We tried using advantix but it was ineffective, so instead of getting a suggestion for medicine, he yells about how we mistreat or animals.

Loneliness? Annoyed by another creature? Litterbox in the wrong place?
Things to check out off the top of my head.

I don't know what could be bothering him. I noticed the fur gone near the middle of summer. I thought it was because our female had gotten outside and was gone for so long, but the 'self-mutilation' stared before that.
Maybe he's upset cos he's got fleas! ;D
And we used Advantage on him and the other cat, and got one for the dog too because she's scratching too. Lol, almost fell over trying to scratch her belly standing up.

"Now Fluffy, there've been some issues recently and I thought you might like to talk about them." Mewr? "Come on Fluffy, you can trust me."
Er, too lazy to do a full script.
Oh, boredom could be another. Kinda goes with lonliness so I forgot about it.
Now, unfortunately, I'll have to tell my friends that you have an emo cat. Past month or so it's been this running joke about people who are emo.

Aaawwww, Kitty. . . . Don't do that . . . .
Wait a sec, he licks himself way too much and it's supposed to be self-mutalation. My dog licks my feet ALOT. Does that mean he's trying to kill me?

Well, it has almost been an entire year that our cat has had this problem. The flea stuff has worked, but he was still cleaning himself way too much. So I took him to the vet again and she gave him; -a steriod shot. (i don't know why) -an antibiotic shot, (because he was cleaning himself to the point that he would give himself sores.) -and behavior modification pills (to stop him from over cleaning) My cat has a mental problem and is on cheap drugs. Good grief.

Have you tried 'Rescue remedy' Rell, if your cat is self harming due to stress 'rescue remedy' might help calm him.

Rescue Remidy? Never heard of it. What is it?
BTW, giving a cat a pill is not as easy as one would think.

I have friends who have used this on their pets and had good results, I am even planning on getting myself some as you can buy it in a bottle with a squirt applicator, just a couple of squirts on the tongue and you feel calm Here's a link to some info about it. www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=0&articleid=1360
