First of all, there are a ton of boards here so I wasn't sure which was the right one.
Anyway, apparently there are bills trying to be passed to allow firearms on college campuses. Does anyone other than me think anyone that could possibly think that's a good idea is a complete idiot?
I read about this in another forum and a lot of people there think it's a good idea. There was a lot of "I carry a gun with me" and nonsense similar. Think about it, though. If 0.001% of people are idiots and start shooting people, that could still end up being disastrous.
Think about what could follow. Say everyone in the United States is allowed to carry a gun. If 0.001% of them are idiots that pull something similar to the Virginia Tec Shooting, that is nearly 10 million Americans dead in one year (based on 2008 census and numbers from VT shooting).
Do you think guns should be allowed on college campuses where hormones are going insane and parties involving drugs and alcohol are seemingly endless?

No I don't.....if they were concetrned with protection perhaps something less fatal like a zapper, mace or something effective but not fatal. You ever find a source, it would be interesting to read.

They've provided sources for me so I'll get them and I'll look around for a few more, too. I usually don't get into stuff like this too much, but this is just ridiculous. As someone that has been to college and wants to go back, I really don't want people sitting next to me with loaded weapons. On that other forum I mentioned, someone said something similar to what you said. It was immediately discounted by the rednecks because of the "mace vs a gun, mace loses because gun is more powerful" kind of attitude. There are far too many idiots in this world.

I heard this mentioned on FOX or CNN last night. I actually don't think it should be allowed and I don't think Teacher's should be allowed either. I don't think it should be allowed because some of those classes are HUGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
compared to an actual high school classroom. You maybe got 50 or over..in one classroom at a college compared to 20-30 in a high school.
Also too take in the fact that even though people drink and do drugs that the "legal" drugs are sometimes more Powerful then any "illegal" drug out there on the market. That alone....screams bad idea.
I think we should just try and pay more attention. Who all is actually maybe able to try something like this. It's really those around them that is responsible to say something and speak up. It's not society as a whole. If someone honest to God thinks someone is going to pull a VA Tech style shooting or something to themselves it's up to them to get the bells and alarms sounded. If no one takes it seriously you keep going up and up till you are Made to be heard.
It's kinda like it was when I was a cart attendent. I'd rather face a ticked off parent..and fired then see a kid die in the parking lot...because there mom/dad left them in the car when it's 90 plus outside.

The idea behind allowing the not crazy people to carry handguns is if someone does start mowing down a crowd, there will be plenty of people to take him out before he does more damage. I realize that most all of these gunmen commit suicide at the end, but would you open fire in a room if you knew that five other people had guns and would take you out within ten seconds? (By the way, I'm not 100% for this idea. Just tying to present an opposite view.) But one thing, yilduz. Not to call you out, but I'd be careful with comments such as "Does anyone other than me think anyone that could possibly think that's a good idea is a complete idiot?" and "immediately discounted by the rednecks". Just because someone does not agree with you does not make them an idiot, and rednecks are not brainless gun-lovers. Many of us are quite intelligent.

I'm going to be the only one to look at the other side of the coin here, and I'm not even American, but doesn't it say in your Constitution that you all have the right to bare arms? You have the NRA and it's lobbists working non-stop to put the kibosh on any kind of gun control legislation, and until that changes and you have some kind of sane laws you will continue to have these horrible school shooting.
It is illegal in Canada to carry a handgun and you need a permit to own any kind of gun. Shotguns, automatic weapons, rifles, and anything discharging 25- or 32-calibre cartridges are banned and have been since the mid-70's
And guess what, our gun crimes have also decreased dramatcally. The only people who are allowed guns are hunters (with permit), police, any secrurity, or someone who is in a job where police preence is liminted.
I might add, all the gun crimes in Canada are done with weapons that are smuggled into the country from the States.

School shootings are more about mentally and emotionally unstable people than they are about guns. As it is, in most states you have to be 21 to purchase a handgun, so these kids are getting them illegally anyway. Banning guns will to nothing to stop their sale on the black market.
Besides. I can't find my numbers right now, but so many more people die because of alcohol and tobacco that I'm shocked people don't pay more attention to it.
(And by the way... it's not like I don't think the school shootings are horrendous. I have several friends at Virginia Tech, some who were in the vicinity of the shooting.)
