Don't really do fanfics. I take influences from films and also stories and such to get an idea of what I think would be cool and make my own.
And to write over all? Probably something a bit more dramtic. Something that isn't kinda mystery or fantasy/sci-fi. you have to create those whole cloth. And then keep up with it all.

I don't really 'do' fanfics either- most of the time I feel like the story is better left with the author's original intent for it. I don't write them because I have a lot of trouble getting into the heads of characters that aren't of my own creation.
I'll read just about any genre- though I don't tend to enjoy anything that's purely romance. In writing, I've always preferred fantasy, I like being able to twist geogaphy and social customs to fit my vision, and especially being able to bend the rules of science. Only thing I really try to avoid is mystery, because honestly I think writing a good one is harder than writing good fantasy... and humor. Because... I just can't do it =P

I think though the mystery people that I gravitate to are Michale Connely and people that when you read them they know what they are talking about. Connely was a LA reporter for about 12 years. So he's been to crime scenes. He's never worked a case but he's reported them. That and when I read his series it's very real. The "realism" and even how the case works out has truth in it. Fantasy for me is alot of fun. But, challenging to always try and tie it to something that is real and not "fake". That is the tricky part. If the audience can't or doesn't feel some form of humanity or such they wont' accept the ride.

You're absolutely right- but I enjoy that. I spend a ton of time on the worlds I create, coming up with cultures and laws (and even bits and pieces of languages, though not quite to the same extent as Tolkien). But on the other hand, I've seen enough badly done fantasy to know how important it is.

What do I find the easiest to write? Sci-fi/Fantasy. I can't seem to write anything else. Well, anyhting that can be posted here anyway. As for reading, doesn't really matter. But the more technical or very detailed and I'll skip pages.
