We had a thread that was simular to this, but I am not sure where it went, and frankly I am too lazy at the moment to go searching for it...so I figured I would start one here..
What tips would you give someone to be a better writer?
I myself, have heard things like;
Write what you know. Read alot Do not be predicatable
what suggestions would you give?

My tips. READ. This seems so simple people sometimes overlook it. If you're writing sci-fi read sci-fi. Read science articles and learn about things that have to do with your story it will make it easier to write. Take a page from GRRM (not literally)and kill a character. Make a character seem important like he couldn't die like the story almost revolves around him make us love him. Then kill him. Make it seem horrid make your reader cry. This is for unpredictability. keeps us guessing. Now dive into your world. Make everything up. the past is important. It explains culture and helps you make your characters.and how they live and work. Finally. WRITE. Write everyday. A page a paragraph practice makes perfect. Practice practice practice. Soon making a chapter will seem like writing a page did a day ago. my tips take them as you will

write and read is the most important.
The first draft is just for yourself. If you get worried on technical and all that it'll never get done.
I generally do a "section" or a chapter a day.Section are scenes really. I break it down or try to.

It depends what medium realy.
For poetry;
Dont over think and dont force something out, it will come how and when it feels.
If you use self expieriences use and esagerate, dont keep it to real unless thats the point.
If you have nothing to write it down on, say your on the bog, then just chant it over in your head, you can foten get a few lines that way.

My tip:
Concentrate on good dialogue. Dialogue is just as important if not more important than physical description. When writing a story the dialogue helps define who the characters are and what kind of world they're living in. If you don't have good dialogue you don't have anything.
I have seen it way too many times where the character is supposed to be all "tough" and when he opens his mouth he looks like a 5 year old school girl. Unrealistic dialogue makes people walk away.

For writing science fiction, take a popularly accepted fact and then describe what would happen if the opposite were true, and ask the what ifs.

My tips:
Keep it simple, don't overdue on explanations because that can take away from the plot...
but if something needs to be said, say it. Amazingly enough what can seem crystal clear in the writer's head sometimes is more like mud on the page. Don't assume that people will understand.
If you have an idea for something in the future of your story, but aren't there yet, write it down. If it is good then you will have it to play with and fit into your story as you get there. If it sucks, well then you can delete it later.

Expanding abit on Trivia's thought...
Get organized. If you have a story idea, write it down and take it step by step on how it's going to play out. Try to establish a beginning, middle and ending.
Write all your idea's down in a notebook or paper and keep it in a safe place. Sometimes you can peice togeter a story just from small ideas.

a tip from me and i think i might have been the one that started that thread enchant. But anyway, a tip from me is not to let yourself get distracted by anything, in particularly like if you're writing online, don't turn on any messengers cause you just get distracted.

A tip from me? ok... Take your time and read and re-read what you write to makeshure if it makes sense or not.

I personally prefer to handwrite first, I've always done better that way. Decreasing distractions is definitely a plus- another reason why I can't compose on the computer (I give in to aim, and then before I know it, I have three forums up and I'm not writing anymore =X)
Anyhow, specifics... I hate revision. So I try to write perfectly the first time, despite the impossiblity of that. Most people find it works a lot better to just plow through, write what comes to your head and don't stop, slow down or look back until you've finished a complete draft. I can't work like that, but I know people who that has helped tremendously.
Like someone else said (I think) writing good dialgoue is pivotal. Listen to how people talk, and pick up on their mannerisms. Little bitty details just make your story all the more believable. The less you have to actually tell your readers, the better. Don't say someone is kind, show it through their actions and words throughout the story. Avoiding over explanation is a great way to improve writing.

I , myself have a problem with Dialogue... I envision it in my head, but it never works right on paper....
I have also heard to just right, and when you stop go back and read what you wrote and build from that...

Dont be afraid of your work and dont let any one person get you down.
If you have trouble with starting a new story dont be scared to find new ways to do it, that is one reason many people fail to gain a carreer in writing.
