I felt the need for a small rant. Since I'm from a non-english speaking country, all the movies come here with subtitles. But why, oh why, can't they be properly translated? Is it really so hard to get the words right? I mean, I understand if it's some word pun and it can't really be properly translated, but otherwise... it annoys me so much to hear that a character says one thing, and I'm reading something completely different.
Does it ever happen to you guys to see things translated wrong?

To be honest, if I am watching a movie that has subtitles, I wouldn't be able to know what they are are saying...and can only rely on what I am reading and how they are acting....the actual words ...I have to take what is given to me in the movie.

My daughter is learning Japanese at University and this is one of her pet hates too. She proffers to watch Japanese TV shows or Anime in Japanese , she puts up the subtitles for my benefit but I can guarantee all through the movie she will be tutting and sucking her teeth with annoyance at the foolish translations, me being a none Japanese speaker am totally oblivious to whats wrong but she often gets very frustrated by it.

Goodness, don't even get me started on this one lol. I honestly can't stand translations as most of the time they're truly horrible. It is not half bad at the cinema, but TV translations are atrocious. Honestly, I sometimes wonder who on earth translates the films when they get the words wrong, and I'm not even talking of trying to make jokes or puns in the films/shows have any sense... I know that translation is a complicated thing from my own experience, but dear me, it is really possible to make a good translation so why not spend more time and put more effort into doing things right?

Yeah, Tv stations should consider hiring better people, or at least running a double check on them before releasing them.

I think translating anything from one language to another is difficult at best. Some languages (like French) have more than one meaning for a word. It also may have to do with the mechanics of the language. I know Portugese people who can speak the language, but not spell it.
The subtitles are for those who want to enjoy a forien show but can't speak the language. Does it really matter if the dialoge is off? They don't know that what they're hearing is so different until someone says so.

There are tough languages, but I don't think English classifies as one of them, and since nowadays most of the people who watch films on TV are fairly familiar with english, I would expect the TV stations to show some more respect.
