FAR from being something that is old and not used anymore. It's even online. I know a few rpg based rooms that use D&D to r/p.

The current edition of D&D is D&D 3.5. A few years after Wizards released 3rd edition, they took feedback they were getting from players and revised some of the aspects of the game.
One of the amazing things they've done with 3.5 is that the core ruleset is online for free. They've left out experience points and a few other things so that you'll buy the core books. They've done this so other game companies can just make other sorts of source books or adventures and such.

I also run an AD&D message board (proboard) that has grown quite large. I hope you don't mind the add, I'll add this site to the Affiliate Center there. We are always happy to meet new people. Link removed
