Mum leaves baby in car while she has her hair done
«
A MOTHER was arrested after she left her baby in her car – so she could get her hair cut.
Police were called to North Road in Boldon Colliery after a woman walking by noticed an 18-month-old child locked inside a car.
She had raised the alarm after waiting next to the car for 20 minutes in the hope someone would return.
Officers used the registration details to find out where the owner of the green Vauxhall Corsa lived and began knocking on doors in the street, while colleagues were sent to the address to try and track down the child's parents.
They were preparing to break into the vehicle to rescue the crying child when a woman emerged from a nearby hairdressers and explained she was the boy's mother.
The woman, a 22-year-old who lives locally, was arrested on suspicion of neglect and later given a caution.
Northumbria Police has urged those responsible for children not to leave them unattended in cars.
A spokesman said: "The doors of the car were locked and the baby has been crying, but it appears it was not in too much distress.
"The child was found to be fit and well in the end and the child protection unit has dealt with this."
"There is a difference between popping into a shop for two seconds and what has happened here."
A 26-year-old man who lives nearby told the Echo: "A police officer came and knocked on our door to ask if one of us had the car and said there was a baby in the back.
"When I came out the woman had just come out of the hairdressers and her hair was wet.
"She was put in the back of the police car and given a good talking too.
"Obviously it was a really irresponsible thing to do."
Police were called to the scene at 2pm on Thursday, with the child rescued 40 minutes later.

I was shocked by this story as its in the village where I was brought up and where my parents still live! I think it was very irresponsible of the woman and she deserves to be ticked off by the police, I hate to think what might have happened to the child if the incident had happened during the warmer months!
