Not that I'm rubbing it in or anything, but the concerns that the critics have about the show were the exact same ones[/u] that fans on the Jericho site had. LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - CBS thought it had a novel idea, one that would resonate with viewers of all ages.
"Kid Nation," scheduled to premiere September 19, features 40 children ages 8-15 who try to form a community without adults in a deserted town in the New Mexico desert.
But soon after the reality show wrapped production in May, problems began to crop up.
Government officials in New Mexico began to suspect that labor laws might have been violated. Reportedly, the kids had to put in 14-hour days with little supervision. One girl suffered burns on her face in a kitchen accident; others accidentally drank bleach.
Industry observers began to wonder why the parents of young children would send them to a New Mexico desert for 40 days, entrusting them to producers they barely knew. And they questioned the wisdom of turning youngsters into entertainment fodder before they are old enough to understand how much national exposure might change their lives -- and not necessarily for the better.Full Story

But that's just it Aaron. CBS is a big station and they're resorting to this?? They can't make it look like the kids are getting any help, it would destroy the illusion that these kids are on their own. Personally, I hope it either flops or is not aired.

I never understood the reasoning behind this....I remember when they advertised it...I was like "WHY?"...Its big networks, trying to take a good cash cow and make more at the expensive of others, to me that is to be expected. The problem I have is the parents...Perhpas 16 and up I can see, it perhaps being used as a survival type camp...but for children younger then that...I can't imagine letting my daughter go on something like that....

Well, I disagree. I really, really want to see how this turns out. (Okay, so I do agree a little bit on the "Who would let their kids do this?" part.)
I was typing on another message board during the first episode:
So we toss a bunch of kids into a ghost town for 40 days and let them run amok their own government and such.
Ages 8 (and a half) to 15.
Every few days they hand out a gold star which is worth $20,000.
And it seems first, they have to get to town. I didn't quite hear how many miles they have to go before getting to their town, but they've got several wagons they have to pull and at one point they even end up adding a 14 year old boy to their load (he pulled a muscle or something).
Luckily for them water comes out of a pump.
Of course, none of them seem to be able to cook... They wasted a huge pot full of pasta the first night because they added waaaaaay too much and it wasn't cooking.
Sounds like the pancakes were good... at least for the ones who got them.
So, anyone want to take bets on when Piggy's going to bite the dust?
Well... They just screwed those kids over.
Now they're dividing them into Classes.
Upper Class - $1.00 - Red No chores.
Merchants - $0.50 - Blue Run stores?
Cooks - $0.25 - Yellow Uh, cook?
Laborers - $0.10 - Green Haul water, scrub toilets, do laundry.
For the value of money - Root beer will cost $0.05
Whole town wins reward.
Seven more outhouses.
OR... DAMN COMMERCIAL BREAKS!!!
TV!
They were smart and went with the outhouses. Good thing. Now I don't have to kill them.
And wow, Sophia is the smartest kid there. She got $0.10 for her chores and danced her way to the $3.00 bike.
Nah, just the ones on CBS.
I was excited for Kid Nation from the moment I saw the first promo.
For some stupid reason we say it's not okay to experiment on humans since that one psychologist (Zimbardo was it?) did his prison experiment.
And then we have those silly child labor laws. (Which might keep a Kid Nation 2 from being made, at least in the US.)
So Kid Nation, even with those cameramen and their version of Jeff Probst, is as close as we'll probably get to Lord of the Flies until there's a major shift in opinions about what's ethical research.
Next week. . .
That Older Kid tries to get the Gold Star. ~ I hope he fails.
Sophia continues whining about the council. This ain't Survivor or Big Brother, she does it in the open! ~ I can't wait until they allow a change. They'll have to do it if they really want the kids to be in charge.
To Chicken or not to Chicken? That is the question.
Ah, also one of the youngest kids, Jimmy, 8, chose to go home and they let him.
